Bex Oliger (internationally recognized indigo dye expert) is offering her special seminar on indigo dyeing. She'll demonstrate four different techniques for indigo dyeing, including a woad, Saxon blue (with sulfuric acid), indigo for protein fibers (wool or silk), and indigo for cellulose fibers.

No previous experience necessary. Wear old clothes and expect them to go home with newly added artistic blue smears and blubs. Incidental indigo tattoos are a free bonus.

Course includes a detailed set of recipes that explain the chemistry and culture of these ancient natural dyes.

Fee: $25

Call 573-443-8233 (TBFF) to reserve a spot and get a materials list.

Let Bex do the cooking for you! She'll spend about three days carefully brewing and balancing her indigo potions and you get to use them without all the fuss. The cost? A mere $5 to dip 3 skeins or 2 t-shirts. There will be four vats of indigo (three of various protein formulations and one cellulose) going, including the very rare Saxon Blue. Very few people in the world can make the saxon blue, and we are fortunate that Bex is one of them.

Some tie dyeing equipment will be available, but call ahead for extra materials needed if you want to tie dye.

Know Your Knitting! Let Bex show you how to tell knits from purls, right from wrong sides, how to fix simple mistakes and more!

Reasons to learn Continental knitting:

If you haven't yet learned to knit, let us recommend learning the continental method. It is the most ergonomic knitting technique and used by more knitters around the world than any other style of knitting.

If you already knit, are you a "thrower" (aka English method)? This is your chance to learn to "pick." It's handy to be able to knit both ways.*

If you are left-handed you will find continental knitting easily adjusts for the left handed knitter without having to learn to make pattern adjustments that would be necessary if you actually knitted English style with your left hand.

Come to class with needles and yarn, or we can help you select some to purchase in the shop. We want to help you learn to know YOUR knitting, so bring questions!

*It's especially useful with Fair Isle knitting. If you can knit with both hands, you can carry one color on one hand and the other on the other hand. With a special technique for twisting the yarns as you knit and without removing your hands from your knitting, you can learn to knit Fair Isle at nearly the same speed as your plain knitting.

Have you been watching with longing as your friend turn out complicated-looking lace projects? Have you started one of your own, only to end up with a tangled mess? Let us help you learn how to make the most of increases, decreases and yarn-overs to make beautiful pieces you didn't know you could! Students will learn to read lace charts to make a lace sampler bookmark.

In this class, we will teach you how to create cables without using a cable needle. No more dropped needles, and one less thing to carry around in your knitting bag! This is a tricky technique, but once you learn how, you'll wonder how you ever lived without it. We will also go over reading cable charts and symbols. Students will receive a free copy of Bex's Meriboo Reversible Cable Scarf pattern.
